Websites

*There are a number of great unschooling websites growing out there, this is just a starter list. Please submit your favorites to goobmom23 AT yahoo DOT com.

Heather’s Homeschooling Page: I am particularly fond of Heather’s articles as they were, quite literally, my very first introduction to unschooling. Don’t miss the link to her original homeschooling page. All of her articles/essays are still there and, if I remember correctly, every single one of them is worth reading. Don’t miss her “life itself” essays, as well.

John Holt and Growing Without Schooling "Growing Without Schooling is the title of a newsletter started in 1977 by the late John Holt. The newsletter earned a devoted following of homeschoolers over its twenty-four year history. Growing Without Schooling ceased publication in December, 2001."

Jon’s Homeschool Resources: Probably one of the oldest websites dedicated to homeschooling information on the Internet. It looks like it’s been a while since it has been updated, but I continue to find it a good site to search and I especially enjoy the “people” links which take you to personal sites of homeschool students, graduates, and parents.

Joyce Fetteroll’s unschooling site, Joyfully Rejoycing: This is a marvelous collection of discussion posts on unschooling and “parenting peacefully.” It is a wonderful site for browsing and she has the topics gently broken down into “typical” questions that are often asked about unschooling. Joyce’s answers are always thorough and thoughtful.

Learning in Freedom from the website, "Living life a bit outside of mainstream parameters has it's benefits!  From sleeping and waking at odd hours to creating income in unique methods, it's always an adventure.  We've never had regrets about helping our children learn outside that bizarre institution of school and they pursue learning with joy and peace in their hearts.  Life isn't perfect, but it's sure great!"

Radical Unschooling: No unschooling list would be complete without a link to Sandra Dodd’s unschooling “office.” Sandra has numerous worthy articles on unschooling that are helpful for new and experienced unschoolers alike. Be sure and check out Deschooling for Parents and Seeing Unschooling.

Unschooling.info: Message boards, articles, and resources for unschooling. Be sure to check out the article, The Three Stages of Unschooling by Kelly Lovejoy.

Child's Work: Taking Children's Choices Seriously

by Nancy Wallace

Nancy Wallace is the mother of two very talented, homeschooled children (not to mention musical). She began homeschooling in the late 70s. This was before homeschooling was as accepted as it is today. Apparently, it was quite a battle to have her son removed from school in the first place. The point of Nancy’s book is an honorable one... Read the entire review.

Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense

by David Guterson

...Using examples from students in his classroom and his own children at home, the book is filled with many personal experiences that help you to see where Guterson is coming from. He addresses many of the typical concerns about homeschooling, like socialization. But he also addresses many concerns you don’t usually deal with in books about homeschooling. He presents some very intelligent arguments against homeschooling as presented by his father and some of some of his friends. As interesting as the arguments themselves, are Guterson’s responses – the acknowledgement of the validity of the arguments as well as his reasoning for going against the arguments anyway... Guerrilla Learning: How to Give Your Kids a Real Education With or Without School

by Grace Llewellyn

...The authors freely admit the book is not intended for those already homeschooling, citing an effect of preaching to the choir. They want to reach the millions of public schoolers in our country simply because that is the path chosen by the overwhelming majority.  To this end, they offer much in the way of analysis of our current public education system, through both historical support and real-life examples.
